Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then found numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say early analysis suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they added.
City officials stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for details.
A senior official said the attack rendered him without words and had to be addressed promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
